John Cunningham(22 February 1938 – 1 December 2021) was aRoman Catholicprelatewho served asBishop of Gallowayfrom 2004 to 2014.[2][3]

Biography

Cunninghamwas born inPaisley, Renfrewshire,Scotland, on 22 February 1938.[3]He was educated atSt Mary's College, BlairsandSt. Peter's Seminary, Cardross.Later he was a student of theScots College, Rome[2]from where he attended thePontifical Gregorian University.

He wasordainedto thepriesthoodon 29 June 1961.[3]From 1967 to 1981, he wasextramuralprofessorofCanon Lawat St Peter's College,Glasgow.He was parish priest at St Patrick's,Greenockfrom 1992 to 2004 and was appointedPapalChaplainin 1994. From 1997 to 2004 he wasVicar Generalof theDiocese of Paisley.He was made aPrelate of Honourin 1999.[2]

On the dayMaurice Taylorretired on 7 April 2004, Cunningham was appointed theBishopof theDiocese of Gallowayby theHoly See.He wasconsecratedto theEpiscopateon 28 May 2004, the principalconsecratorbeing CardinalKeith O'Brien,Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburghwith co-consecrating bishopsMaurice Taylor,BishopEmeritusof Galloway andJohn Mone,Bishop of Paisley.[2][3]

Cunningham retired on 22 November 2014 whenPope Francis' appointment ofWilliam Nolanas his successor was announced. He died on 1 December 2021, at the age of 83.[4][5]
