John H. Biggs(born July 19, 1936) is a former director ofThe Boeing Companyfrom their 1997 merger withMcDonnell Douglas[1][2]until May 2011,[3]and theNational Bureau of Economic Researchas well as a trustee ofWashington University in St. Louis.He was previously chairman andchief executive officerof financial services companyTIAA-CREFfrom January 1993 until November 2002.

Education

A native ofSt. Louis,an alumnus ofThomas Jefferson School,[4]Biggs earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in classics fromHarvard University,and a Ph.D. in economics fromWashington University in St. Louis.

Career

Biggs began his professional career with theGeneral American Life Insurance Companyin 1958. He served in variousactuarialmanagement positions, and in 1970 was appointed vice president and controller. In 1977, Mr. Biggs became vice chancellor for Administration and Finance atWashington University in St. Louis.He was named president and CEO of Centerre Trust Company, St. Louis, in 1985.

From 1989 to 1993 he served as president andchief operating officerfor TIAA-CREF, and became CEO in January 1993.

Biggs is currently a director of the Boeing Company[2]andJPMorgan Chase,chairman of theJ. Paul Getty Trust,and atrusteeof Washington University, TheDanforth Foundationin St. Louis, and theSanta Fe Opera.He is a director and former chairman of theUnited Wayof New York City and theNational Bureau of Economic Research.He is a member of theAmerican Academy of Arts and Sciences,and theCouncil on Foreign Relations.He is treasurer of the New York City Investment Fund. He is a fellow of theSociety of Actuaries.He was chairman of the trustees of theGetty Trustand is Executive-in-Residence at NYU-Stern School of Business.

Biggs has published a number of papers on corporate governance, variable annuities, Social Security, regulation and taxation of pension plans, and demographic effects on pensions.
