Education

John Napier was born inLondon.He studied atHornsey College of Artand theCentral School of Arts and Crafts,studying under notable set designerRalph Koltai.

Career

Napier earned a position as an Associate Designer at theRoyal Shakespeare Company.He has designed for theNational Theatre,notably the production ofPeter Shaffer'sEquus,Trelawny of the Wells,An Enemy of the PeopleandCandide.John Napier has also designed for theRoyal Opera House,forGlyndebourne,for theEnglish National Operaand others. He designedChildren of Eden,Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?andJesus Christ Superstarin London'sWest End.He reworked his original designs forEquus(2007 London production).

In the United States, in addition to numerous Broadway productions, he designed and co-directed the show for illusionistsSiegfried & RoyatThe Mirage,Las Vegas.He also designed theCaptain EOvideo starringMichael JacksonforDisneyand theSteven SpielbergfilmHook.

Napier's design awards include theLaurence Olivier Award for Best Set DesignforKing Lear,Lohengrin,andBurning Blue.Napier has wonTony Awardsfor The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby,Cats,Starlight Express,Les MisérablesandSunset Boulevard.

He won the 1987Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Set DesignforStarlight ExpressandLes Misérablesand has twice won theDrama Desk Award for Outstanding Costume DesignforCatsin 1983 andStarlight Expressin 1987. He has wonThe Critics' Circle Awardfor set design and twice for the, first in 1989 forMiss Saigonand again in 1997 forPeter Pan.

Affiliations

Napier is a member of the AmericanAcademy of Achievement.[1][2]He was electedRoyal Designer for Industryin 1996 and is an Honorary Fellow of theLondon Institute.

Personal life

Napier's first wife was Andreane Neofitou, and they had two children, Julian and Elise. Next, from 1984 to 1994, he was married toDonna King,and with her had two more children,Jamesand Jessica. He married thirdly Caroline McGee in June 2014.[3]
