Jonathan Sarfati

Jonathan David Sarfati(born 1 October 1964) is ayoung Earth creationistwho writes articles forCreation Ministries International(CMI), a non-profitChristian apologeticsministry. Sarfati has a PhD in chemistry, and wasNew Zealand national chess championin 1987 and 1988.[1][2]

Background

Born inArarat,Victoria,Sarfati moved with his family to New Zealand as a child, where he became adualAustralianandNew Zealandcitizen. He attendedWellington Collegein New Zealand, later graduating fromVictoria University of Wellingtonwith a BSc (Hons.) inchemistry,and a PhD in the same subject for a thesis entitled "ASpectroscopicStudy of someChalcogenideRing and Cage Molecules ". He co-authored a paper onhigh-temperature superconductorsthat was published inNaturein 1987 ( "Letters to Nature" ),[3]and from 1988 to 1995, had five papers onspectroscopyofcondensed mattersamples published in otherpeer-reviewedscientific journals.[4]In 1996, he returned toBrisbane,Australiato work for theCreation Science Foundation,thenAnswers in Genesis,then its current nameCreation Ministries International.In 2010, he moved to the American office of that ministry.[5]

Creationism

Sarfati was a founder of the Wellington Christian Apologetics Society in New Zealand, and has long retained an interest in Christian apologetics and thecreation–evolution controversy.[6]His first two books,Refuting Evolutionin 1999, andRefuting Evolution 2in 2002, are intended as rebuttals to theNational Academy of Sciences' publicationTeaching about Evolution and the Nature of Scienceand thePBS/NovaseriesEvolution,respectively.Refuting Compromise,published in 2004, is Sarfati's rebuttal of theday-age creationistteachings ofHugh Ross,who attempts to harmonise theGenesis account of creationwith mainstream science regarding theage of the Earthand the possible size of theBiblical Flood,against which Sarfati defends aliteral biblicaltimeline and a global flood.Eugenie ScottandGlenn Branchof theNational Center for Science Educationcalled Sarfati'sRefuting Evolution 2a "crude piece of propaganda".[7]

Sarfati is a critic ofgeocentrism,[8]theMyth of the flat Earth[9]andflat Earthteaching,[10]homosexualbehaviour,[11]andabortion[12]except to save the life of the mother.[13]While opposingembryonic stem cellresearch, he supportsadult stem cellresearch.[14]Sarfati also supportsvaccinationand rebutsanti-vaccination arguments.[15]

Chess

Sarfati is achessFIDE Master,and achieved adrawagainst formerworld championBoris Spasskyduring a tournament inWellingtonin 1988,[16]and wasNew Zealand's national chess championin 1987–88.[17]

Although tied with Rey Casse for first place in theAustralian Junior Championshipof 1981, he was not eligible to share the title as he was a resident of New Zealand at the time.[18]He represented New Zealand in threeChess Olympiads:the 27th inDubai[19]in 1986, the 28th inThessaloniki[20]in 1988, and the 30th inManila[21]in 1992. He also represented New Zealand on top board at the 5th Asian Teams inNew Delhi.[22]

He has givenblindfold chessexhibitions at chess clubs[23]and other events,[24][25][26]and has played twelve such games simultaneously.[27]His previous best was winning 11/11 at theKāpitiChess Club in New Zealand.[28]
