Jordan Gelber(born 1975) is an American actor and singer. He has performed on Broadway in the musicalAvenue Q,inAll My Sonsand inElf the Musical,among other shows. He has also performed in many off-Broadway productions. He has a recurring role in the CBS TV showElementaryand in other television shows.

Early life and education[edit]

Gelber is the son of Donald and Barbra Gelber. He was born in theRiverdaleneighborhood of theBronx,New York City,and grew up inWoodmere,Long Island.[1][2]Gelber has a younger sister, Marielle. Gelber isJewish.[3]In 1993, he graduated fromGeorge W. Hewlett High SchoolinHewlett,Long Island.

He attended theNational Theater Institute.[4]

He is a 1997 graduate ofStanford University,where he was a member of the Stanford Improvisorsimprovisational theatretroupe[5]and ana cappellagroup,Stanford Mendicants.[6]

In 2000, Gelber earned a master's degree in acting fromNew York University'sGraduate Acting Programat theTisch School of the Arts.[6][7]

Career[edit]

Broadway[edit]

He is known for originating the role of struggling comedian Brian in theTony Award-winningBroadwaymusicalAvenue Q.Gelber also performed on Broadway inArthur Miller'sAll My Sonsas Frank Lubey from 2008 to 2009, and played Buddy inElf the Musicalfrom 2012 to 2013.[8]In 2017, at theHudson Theatre,Gelber played Louis/Billy in the limited-run Broadway revival of theStephen Sondheim/James LapinemusicalSunday in the Park With GeorgestarringJake GyllenhaalandAnnaleigh Ashford.[9]

His other off-Broadway credits includeThe Polish Playwith the Katharsis Theater Company andBirth and After Birthat theAtlantic Theater Company.[11]In 2019, he played Nathan Detroit inThe Muny's production ofGuys and Dolls.[12]

A particular performance he is less recognized for was inElvis PeopleatNew World Stages.[13]

Gelber has a recurring role in the CBS TV showElementaryas the medical examiner Dr. Eugene Hawes. He also appeared on the first three episodes of the HBO seriesBoardwalk Empire.His television work also includes a recurring role as CSU Tech Layton onLaw & Order: Special Victims Unitand appearances in episodes ofLaw & Order: Criminal Intent,The SopranosandMr. Robot.

His film credits include a role inRiding in Cars with BoysoppositeSara Gilbert,the 2007 crime dramaBefore the Devil Knows You're DeadandThe Taking of Pelham 123in 2009. In late 2010, he starred in theTodd SolondzfilmDark Horse.In 2016, he played a supporting role in the bo xing drama filmBleed for This.

He lent his voice to the video gameThe Warriorsas Chatterbox, leader of the Hi-Hats gang.

Personal life[edit]

In November 2009, Gelber married Marsha Loeb, a senior online medical editor at McGraw-Hill.[14]They have two sons, Henry and Dashiell.[citation needed]
