Yossef (Joseph) Cedar(Hebrew:יוסף סידר; born August 31, 1968) is an Israelifilm directorandscreenwriter.

Biography[edit]

Cedar was born to anOrthodox Jewishfamily[1]in New York City. His father is biochemistHoward Cedar.When Joseph was 6, his family moved to Israel, and he grew up in theBayit VeGanneighborhood in Jerusalem. He studied in aYeshiva High School.In the Israeli army he served as aparatrooper.After graduating in philosophy and history of theatre from theHebrew University of Jerusalem,he studied cinema studies atNew York University.

Film career[edit]

When he returned to Israel, he started working on the screenplay for his debut film,Time of Favor(2000), for which he moved and lived for two years in theIsraeli settlementDolev.The film won sixOphir Awards,including Best Picture.

His second film wasCampfire(2004), which won five Ophir Awards including Best Picture, with two, Best Director and Best Screenplay, going to Cedar. ForBeaufort(2007), his third film, he received the Silver Bear award for Best Director in theBerlin International Film Festival.Beaufortreceived an Academy Award nomination forBest Foreign Language Film,the first such nomination for an Israeli film in 24 years.[2]It received four Ophir Awards and was based on Cedar's own experiences during his army service on Israel's border with Lebanon.[3]

His filmFootnotepremiered In Competition at the2011 Cannes Film Festival.[4]The film was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.[5] He next wrote and directed Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer, an American-Israeli political drama starring Richard Gere and Lior Ashkenazi. The film played at the 2016 Telluride Film Festival[6] and the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.[7][8] and was released by Sony Pictures Classics.Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer(Hebrew:נורמן: עלייתו המתונה ונפילתו התלולה של מאכער אמריקאי) (previously titledOppenheimer Strategies) is a 2016 American-Israelipoliticaldrama filmdirected and written byJoseph Cedar.The film starsRichard GereandLior Ashkenazi.Filming began on February 8, 2015, inNew York City.The film played at the 2016Telluride Film Festival[6]and the2016 Toronto International Film Festival.[7][8]

In 2019 he co-created, co-wrote and co-directed the HBO limited series "Our Boys" Our Boys(Hebrew:הנערים,Arabic:فتیان) is an American-Israeli television miniseries created byHagai Levi,Joseph Cedar,andTawfik Abu-Wael.The series focuses on the story of thekidnapping and murder of Mohammed Abu Khdeir.

The ten-episode series premiered on August 12, 2019, onHBO.[9]It is a co-production between HBO and Keshet Studios.


Cedar is anOrthodox Jew.[10]His films are known to touch delicate issues ofIsraeli society.Israeli critic Yair Rave wrote, "One of the reasons I like Cedar's films so much is... his ability to merge the Israeli spirit... with the universal cinematic codes."[11]

Awards and recognition[edit]

He has won aSilver Bearand anOphir Awardfor Best Director, and an Ophir Award for writing a Best Screenplay. He also won the best screenplay award at the2011 Cannes Film Festivalfor his filmFootnote(2011).[4]
