Joshua Lee Holloway(born July 20, 1969[2]) is an American actor. He is best known for his roles asJames "Sawyer" Fordon theABCtelevision showLostand as Will Bowman on theUSA Networkscience fiction dramaColony.He also had a recurring role in the third season of theParamount Networkwestern seriesYellowstone.
Early life
[edit]Holloway was born inSan Jose, California,the second of four boys of a nurse mother and a surveyor father.[3][4]His family moved to theBlue Ridge MountainsofGeorgiawhen he was two. He was raised inFree Home, Georgia.[5]Holloway is related to Baptist preacher Dr. Dale Holloway, and author and World War IIprisoner of warCarl Holloway.[6]He is also a descendant ofRobert E. Lee.[1]Holloway attendedCherokee High SchoolinCanton, Georgia,graduating in 1987. He developed an interest in movies at a very young age. He studied at theUniversity of Georgiabut left after one quarter due to financial constraints.[7]
Career
[edit]Holloway moved to Los Angeles, where he began a successful career as a runway and print model, including for brandsDolce & Gabbana,Calvin KleinandDonna Karan.[7]In 1993, Holloway appeared in theAerosmithvideo for the song "Cryin'"as a thief who tries to stealAlicia Silverstone's backpack from a diner, only to be caught and beaten up by her.[1]
Holloway eventually started acting. His first role was as "Good Looking Guy" in an episode ofAngelin 1999, followed by a role in the comedyDoctor Bennyand in the moviesMi Amigo,Moving August,andCold Heart.Following these roles, he gained recognition for his lead role in theSci-Fi ChannelmovieSabretoothwithDavid KeithandJohn Rhys-Davies.He also made appearances inGood Girls Don'tepisode "Addicted To Love";NCISepisode "My Other Left Foot";The Lyon's Denepisode "Separation Anxiety";Walker, Texas Rangerepisode "Medieval Crimes"; andCSI: Crime Scene Investigationepisode "Assume Nothing".
His big break came when he was cast asJames "Sawyer" Fordin the hit television seriesLost.The show propelled Holloway to celebrity status, but left him with little time to leverage his fame with other roles. According toUSA Today,he took himself out of consideration for a role in aBrad PittWesterndue to the demands of his filming schedule.[8]Nevertheless, he found time to star in the thrillerWhisperand he also ventured into the world of video games inCommand & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.In the game, he plays the role of a Brotherhood of Nod intelligence officer named Ajay whose primary role is to assist players by supplying information that is crucial to upcoming battles. In May 2007, 20th Century Fox approached Holloway for the second time and offered him the role ofGambitinX-Men 4[broken anchor].In 2005,Peoplemagazine named Holloway one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World".[9]In January 2006,In Touch Weeklynamed Holloway the "hottest hunk" on television.[10]In the same month, Holloway was voted the seventeenth-sexiest guy worldwide by British readers ofOK!magazine. In the same year, he was voted the second-sexiest star in Hollywood byUs Weekly.[11]
In March 2007, Holloway was selected as the new face forDavidoff's fragranceCool Waterworldwide.[12]In Spring 2008, Holloway was selected as the first male spokesperson forMagnumice cream of Turkey. Previous Magnum spokespersons includeEva LongoriaandElizabeth Hurley.In the same year he made the top ten list ofTV Guide's Sexiest Stars.[13]
Holloway appeared in the 2009 filmStay Cool,a comedy written by thePolish brothers.ArtistSalvador Larrocais believed byComic Book Resourcescolumnist Timothy Callahan to have used Holloway as the model for his rendition ofTony Starkduring his run onIron Man,which began in 2008.[14]In June 2010, Holloway won aSaturn Awardfor "Best Actor on Television" for his role onLost.In September 2010, Holloway was added to the cast ofMission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol,which was released in December 2011. In 2014, Holloway starred in the lead role in theCBStelevision showIntelligenceas acybercrimeagent who can "access the entireelectromagnetic spectrum"with his mind.
In 2016, Holloway began starring inColonyas Will Bowman, a former FBI agent who, in a bid to protect his family, is forced to collaborate with the occupational government to bring down the growing resistance movement inside the L.A. colony in the near future.Colonymarked aLostreunion for Holloway and executive producer Carlton Cuse.[15][16]
Personal life
[edit]At the end of shooting theLostpilot inOahu,Hawaii,Holloway proposed to his long-time girlfriend, Yessica Kumala.[1][17]The couple married on October 1, 2004. They have two children.[18]
