Julia Loktev
Julia Loktev(born December 12, 1969) is a Russian–American film director, screenwriter, andvideo artist.
Early life
[edit]Julia Loktev was born inLeningrad,Soviet Union(nowSt. Petersburg,Russia). She immigrated to the United States as a child and lived inColoradountil leaving for college. She moved toMontrealto study English and film atMcGill University.[1]
Career
[edit]Loktev came acrossTom Bishell's book of short storiesGod Lives in St. Petersburgand read it because she had been born inSt. Petersburg.She decided to adapt the short story Expensive Trips Nowhere into the filmThe Loneliest Planettransporting the setting fromKazakhstantoGeorgia.[2]
Loktev was resident atEyebeamin 2005.[3]
In 2015,Richard Brodycalled her one of the best woman movie directors.[4]
Personal life
[edit]In 1989, when she was 19, her father was severely injured in an automobile accident. The event was the subject of her 1998 documentaryMoment of Impact.[7]
