In many armed forces, a junior officer is specifically acommissioned officerholding rank equivalent to a navallieutenant,an armycaptainor aflight lieutenantor below.[citation needed]
In theUnited States Armed Forces,the termjunior officeris used by theNavy,Coast Guard,Public Health Service,andNOAA Corpsfor officers in the ranks ofchief warrant officer(W-2 to W-4),ensign(O-1),lieutenant (junior grade)(O-2),lieutenant(O-3), andlieutenant commander(O-4).[citation needed]
