Kanakangi(pronounced kanakāngi, meaningthe golden bodied one) is aragaminCarnatic music(musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 1stMelakartarāgam in the 72melakartarāgam system of Carnatic music. It is calledKanakāmbariin theMuthuswami Dikshitarschool.[1][2]

Structure and Lakshana[edit]

It is the 1st rāgam in the 1stchakra Indu.The mnemonic name isIndu-Pa.The mnemonic phrase issa ra ga ma pa dha na.[1]Itsārohaṇa-avarohaṇastructure (ascending and descending scale) has allshuddhaswaras,as follows (seeswarasin Carnatic musicfor details on below notation and terms):

It is asampurnarāgam– a rāgam that has all sevenswaras(notes) and is often dubbed theshuddhascale, owing to itsswarasthanas.It is theshuddha madhyamamequivalent ofSalagam,which is the 37thmelakarta.

Asampurna Melakarta[edit]

Kanakāmbariis the 1stMelakartain the original list compiled byVenkatamakhin.The notes used in the scale are the same, but the ascending scale is different. It is anaudava-sampurnaraga (5 notes in ascending scale, while full 7 are used in descending scale).[3]
