Katherine Renee Shindle(born January 31, 1977) is an American actress, singer, dancer, andAIDSactivist. From 2015 to 2024 she served as the President of theActors' Equity Association.She wasMiss America 1998in 1998 andMiss Illinoisin 1997.

Shindle was born inToledo, Ohio,[1]grew up inBrigantine, New JerseyandMoorestown, New Jersey[2][3]and attended high school atBishop Eustace Preparatory School.[4]She was a double major insociologyandtheater(with a minor inmusical theater) atNorthwestern University.[2][4]She has worked as an actress in New York since 1999.[2]Shindle is also a licensed real estate agent.[2]

Shindle appeared (as a replacement) in the Broadway production ofJekyll & Hydeas understudy for the role of Lucy and several other roles.[5]After being cast by co-directors Sam Mendes and Rob Marshall, she played the role of Sally Bowles in the 1998 Broadway revival ofCabareton the national tour in 2000–2001, and on Broadway during June–July 2001.[6]She played this role again in the Maltz Jupiter Theatre (Jupiter, Florida) production, starting in January 2012, and was nominated for a 2013 Carbonell Award.[7]In 2007-2008 she appeared in the Broadway musicalLegally Blondeas Vivienne Kensington.[8]She played the Mad Hatter in the Broadway production ofWonderlandin 2011.[5][9]

She appeared in a concert version ofJeykll & Hydein September 2004 at theMohegan Sun Casino's Cabaret Theatre inUncasville, Connecticut,playing Lucy.[10]She then toured in the United States with the concert version, starting in September 2005, and recorded the role on theJekyll & Hyde: Resurrectionalbum.[11]

In 2014, she wrote a memoir,BeingMiss America:Behind the Rhinestone Curtain,published by theUniversity of Texas Press.[2][12]

In 2015, she defeated incumbentNick Wymanfor the presidency of theActors' Equity Association,[13]a position she held until 2024, when she declined to run for another term.[14]
