TheKhroma(Russian:Хрома) is a river in theSakha Republic(Yakutia) of theRussian Federation.It is 685 kilometres (426 mi) long, and has adrainage basinof 19,700 square kilometres (7,600 sq mi).[1]

Course

The source of the Khroma is at the confluence of the Tamteken and the Nemalak-Arangas, flowing down from thePolousny Range.[2]It crosses theYana-Indigirka Lowland,part of the greaterEast Siberian Lowland.It flows across thetundraroughly northeastwards and finally it has its mouth west of the mouth of theLapchainKhroma Baywhich is connected with theEast Siberian Sea.Owing to its extreme northerly location the Khroma River freezes up in early October and remains icebound until June.

Tributaries

The main tributary of the Khroma is the 314 km (195 mi) longYuryung-Ulakh(Юрюнг-Уулаах) that joins its left bank 9.4 km (5.8 mi) before its mouth.[1]

Wetlands

The Kytalyk Wetlands, located between the Khroma and theSundrun(Khroma-Sundrun Interfluvial Area) is an ecologically important area, providing a favorable habitat for many rare animals. The region is practically uninhabited and full of lakes and marshes. Wildreindeer,Siberian cranes,Canadian cranes,marsh sandpipersandRoss's gullsare abundant in the Khroma River wetlands.[3]

Thelesser white-fronted goose,[4]brent goose,Bewick's swanand thespectacled eiderare also found in the Khroma-Sundrun Interfluvial Area.[5]

Gold andtin miningupriver are affecting the ecology of the region by destroying fish and bird habitat.[6]
