KibiorKyebiis a town located in theEast Akim Municipal District,Eastern RegionofGhana.Its population is 11,677 people as of 2013.

History

Kibi is the traditional capital of theAkyem Abuakwastate in theEastern regionofGhana(also known as Okyeman). The Ofori Panin paramount stool, the traditional seat of theOkyenhene,is located in Kibi.[citation needed]

Transport

The Kibirailway stationserves Kibi a short distance on the Ghanarail transportnetwork.

Education

Kibi has a number of educational institutions fromprimary educationtohigher education,as well as a school for the deaf, which was founded in 1975 and had 213 students by 2008.[2]

Economy

Tarkwaian rocks, a major source ofgold,have been found near Kibi.[3]Severalminingcompanies, includingParamount Mining Corporation,have been exploring their potential.[4]RUSAL,a majorRussianAluminiumcorporation, applied to the Ghana Minerals Commission and the Ghana Integrated Aluminium Industry Committee for permission to explore the Ghanabauxitedeposits near Kibi.[5]The town is known for a high volume ofgalamseyactivities, which eventually caused contamination of theBirim River.[6]
