Founded in 1981 by Bill Kimpton and led byChief Executive OfficerMike DeFrino, the group was the largest chain ofboutique hotelsin the United States in 2011. As of January 2024, it operates 81 hotels worldwide with a number of new properties forthcoming.[2]New hotels have been announced forIndianapolis,Los Angeles,[3]Paris,Barcelona,Charlottesville,[4]Frankfurt,Grenada,Bali,Tokyo,Shanghai,Hong Kong,[5]Rotterdam[6]andSanya.[7][when?]

While most Kimpton properties are marketed under their own names as boutique hotels, the company launched two sub-brands in 2005, Hotel Palomar and Hotel Monaco. Each property has a restaurant or bar that is marketed as upscale or trendy. In 2020,Fortunemagazine ranked Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants at number 10 on their Fortune List of the Top 100 Companies to Work For in 2020 based on an employee survey of satisfaction.[8]The company also manages and operates hotels owned by other entities, under contract.

On December 16, 2014, IHG announced that it would acquire Kimpton for $430 million in cash. IHG retained the Kimpton brand name within the U.S. and is expanding it globally.[9][10]As a result of the acquisition, seven of Kimpton's nine hotels in San Francisco left the brand in July 2015.

The company's environmental program is called Earthcare. Every hotel adopts standardenvironmentally friendlyproducts and practices, such aseco-friendlycleaning supplies andrecycling.[14]

LGBT

Every year, the company sponsors ared ribboncampaign generating awareness and funds for localHIVservice agencies. Local hotels make donations toLGBTcharities and host events for local community groups. Kimpton formed K-GLEN, the Kimpton Gay and Lesbian Employee Network, to advise the company on personnel and community outreach concerns. The committee meets quarterly and has representation from every region of the country. The company was included as one of the ten best companies for gay and lesbian employees byThe Advocate.[15]It has received a 100% rating on theCorporate Equality Indexreleased by theHuman Rights Campaignevery year since 2005.[16]
