Species

Kluyveromycesis agenusofascomycetousyeastsin the familySaccharomycetaceae.[2]Some of the species, such asK. marxianus, are theteleomorphsofCandidaspecies.

The genus name ofKluyveromycesis in honour ofAlbert Jan KluyverForMemRS(1888-1956), who was aDutchmicrobiologistandbiochemist.[3]

The genus wascircumscribedby Johannes P. Van der Walt inAntonie van Leeuwenhoekvol.22 on pages 268–271 in 1956.

MatingandsporulationinKluyveromycesare co-induced by poor environments and most often occur in succession without interveningdiploidmitotic cell divisions.[4]

ARAD52gene homolog fromKluyveromyces lactiswas cloned and characterized.[5]This gene, which has a central role in recombinational repair of DNA, can complementS. cerevisiaerad52mutants.[5]
