Kokilapriya(The one dear to thekoel) is aragaminCarnatic music(musical scale of South Indian classical music). It is the 11thMelakartarāgam in the 72melakartarāgam system of Carnatic music. The 11th rāgam inMuthuswami Dikshitarschool of Carnatic music is calledKokilāravam.[1][2]

Structure and Lakshana

It is the 5th rāgam in the 2ndchakra Netra.The mnemonic name isNetra-Ma.The mnemonic phrase issa ra gi ma pa dha na.[1]Itsārohaṇa-avarohaṇastructure (ascending and descending scale) is as follows (seeswarasin Carnatic musicfor details on below notation and terms):

(this scale uses the notesshuddha rishabham, sadharana gandharam, shuddha madhyamam, chathusruthi dhaivatham, kakali nishadham)

As it is amelakartarāgam, by definition it is asampoornarāgam(has all seven notes in ascending and descending scale). It is theshuddha madhyamamequivalent ofSuvarnangi,which is the 47thmelakarta.

Asampurna Melakarta

Kokilāravamis the 11thMelakartain the original list compiled byVenkatamakhin.The notes used in the scale are the same, but the scales arevakra(zig-zag in phrases of the scale). It is anshadava-sampurnaraga (6 notes in ascending scale, while full 7 are used in descending scale).[3]
