Komeil Ghasemi(Persian:کمیل قاسمی,born 27 February 1988)[1]is a retired Iranianwrestlerwho won a gold medal in themen's freestyle 120 kgevent at the2012 Summer Olympics.[2]Ghasemi was awarded his Olympic gold medal after the two wrestlers ahead of him failed drug tests.[3]Ghasemi is the most successful Iranian heavyweight wrestler at the Olympic Games.

He also won a silver medal at the2011 Asian Wrestling Championshipsin the 120 kg freestyle discipline.[4]He was born inJuybar,in Iran'sMazandaranprovince but spent his childhood inSari.He started wrestling seriously after moving back toJuybar.[5][6]Following his Olympic appearance, Ghasemi won the 120 kg weight class at the 2013 Freestyle World Cup in Tehran, Iran, helping his nation take gold in the tournament.[7]At the2014 Asian Wrestling Championshipshe won a gold medal in the 125 kg freestyle tournament,[8]while at that year'sWorld Championshipshe took silver in the same event.[9]He took silver in the 125 kg freestyle event at the2015 Asian Wrestling Championships,losing the final toAiaal Lazarevof Kyrgyzstan,[10]and the2016 Summer Olympics,behindTaha Akgülof Turkey.[11]Ghasemi retired in 2019 after losing the Iranian trials for the2019 World Wrestling Championships.[12][13][14][15]

Coaching career

As of 2023, Ghasemi is the head coach of Cambodian national wrestling team. He started his coaching position in October 2020.[16]Under Ghasemi Cambodian wrestlers recorded a total haul of 19 medals (three golds, three silvers and 13 bronzes) at the 2022 Southeast Asian Wrestling Championship, their biggest ever since first joining the regional tournament a few years back.[17]
