The Kop van Overijssel

TheKop van Overijssel(English:Head of Overijssel) is a region in the very northwestern part of theDutchprovince ofOverijssel.It consists of the municipality ofSteenwijkerlandand matches the historical region of theLand van Vollenhove.In past times it comprised a wider area, the municipalities ofKampen,ZwartewaterlandandStaphorstalso belonging to it.

The Kop van Overijssel has about 43,000 inhabitants and an area of about 322 km2,of which a tenth is water. The 'capital' isSteenwijk.Other noteworthy places areBlokzijl,Giethoorn(a 'Venice of the North') andVollenhove.

The region is nearly surrounded by three provincial borders: in the west that ofFlevoland(Noordoostpolderregion), in the north that ofFriesland(Stellingwervenregion) and in the east that ofDrenthe(the municipalities ofWesterveldandMeppel). In the south it borders onSalland,another region ofOverijssel.

In the is amarshof about 60 km2,Nationaal Park Weerribben-Wieden.It is anational park[1]that contains the lakesBeulakerwijdeandBelterwijde.
