Kovalchuk(UkrainianandRussian:Ковальчук),Kavalchuk(Belarusian:Кавальчук),Kowalczuk(Polish),Covalciuc(Romanian), also transliterated asKowalchuk(in theNorth Americandiaspora), is a commonEast Slavic surname(one of the most popular inUkraine).[1]The Kovalchuk name extends back to before 1500 AD inKievan Rus.[citation needed]

Koval(Коваль) literally translates asforgeorblacksmith.The suffix-chukdenoted either a son of, or an apprentice to a blacksmith. It is somewhat similar in commonality toEnglishsurnameSmith.It is also cognate with very popular Polish surnamesKowalczykandKowalski.

InEast Slavic languages,the correctpronunciationis ko-vahl-CHOOK. AmongUkrainian Canadians,the pronunciation ko-WAL-chuk is more common.[citation needed]
