Lawrence Alan Hankin(born December 7, 1937)[1][2][3][4][5]is an Americancharacter actor.He has had major film roles as Charley Butts inEscape from Alcatraz(1979), Ace inRunning Scared(1986), and Carl Alphonse inBilly Madison(1995). He had smaller roles as Doobie inPlanes, Trains and Automobiles,Sergeant Larry Balzak inHome Alone,Mr. Heckles inFriends,and Joe inBreaking BadandEl Camino.[6]
Early life
[edit]Hankin was born inNew York Cityon December 7, 1937,[1]and grew up in a Jewish family in theFar Rockawayneighborhood of Queens.[7]He graduated fromFar Rockaway High SchoolandSyracuse University,where he befriendedCarl Gottlieb.[8]
Career

[edit]Hankin was an early member of theSecond City,training with improvisational theater teachers Viola Spolin and Paul Sills, and in 1963 moved to San Francisco to co-found the improv troupe, The Committee.[9]His first notable supporting role was as Pt. Romero inViva Max!in 1969.
He had roles in TV showsBreaking Bad,Matlock,andFriends(asMr. Heckles), as well as a major role inEscape from Alcatraz(1979) withClint Eastwood.[6]He also acted inHow Sweet It Is!(1968) withDebbie ReynoldsandJames Garnerand theAdam SandlermovieBilly Madison(1995). He had cameo appearances in threeJohn Hughesfilms:Planes, Trains and Automobiles(1987),She's Having a Baby(1988), andHome Alone(1990), the latter of which coincidentally featuredRoberts Blossom(playing Old Man Marley), whom he co-starred with inEscape from Alcatraz.He made a brief appearance inPretty Woman(1990) as the landlord, and had minor roles inLoose Shoes(1980), as "Handicap" inThe Sting II(1983),The Sure Thing(1985), andRunning Scared(1986). Hankin also appeared inMarried... with Children,as well as one of the Halloween specials ofHome Improvement.Hankin also appeared in three episodes ofStar Trek: Voyageras Gaunt Gary and one episode ofStar Trek: The Next Generation.Hankin andCurtis Armstrongplayed the hippie entrepreneurs who purchased "Buy the Book" (the bookstore where the titular character works at) onEllen.
OnSeinfeld,Hankin portrayedTom Pepper,the actor cast asKrameron the pilot-within-a-TV-showJerry.He portrayed a homeless man in season 5 ofMalcolm in the Middle.He then appeared again withBryan Cranstoninseasons threeandfiveofBreaking Badas junkyard owner Old Joe. He reprised his old role fromBreaking Badin theNetflixsequel filmEl Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie.
Other work

In 1977, Hankin appeared in the episode "The Bums vs. the Reds" of thesituation comedyThe San Pedro Beach Bums.He also played Mickey the Bartender in aWKRP in Cincinnatiepisode called "Hotel Oceanview" that also has a cameo appearance byDr. Joyce Brothersas "Vicky Von Vicky".[citation needed]
In 1982, he played the dog catcher that tries to take Sandy inAnnie.[citation needed]
In 1980, Hankin's short filmSolly's Dinerearned him and the film's producers a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Live Action Short Film.[citation needed]
Hankin was a founding member of thecommedia dell'arteimprovisationgroupThe Committeein 1963, located at an indoorbocceball court inSan Francisco'sNorth Beachdistrict.[citation needed]
He appeared in theJanet Jacksonmusic video for her 1986 hit single "What Have You Done for Me Lately"as a cook/waiter.[citation needed]
