Dorthea Lauren Allegra Lapkus(born September 6, 1985) is an American actress and comedian, known for portraying Susan Fischer in theNetflixcomedy-drama seriesOrange Is the New Black(2013–2014, 2019) and Jess in theHBOcomedy-drama seriesCrashing(2017–2019). She has also appeared in the television seriesAre You There, Chelsea?(2012),Hot in Cleveland(2012),Clipped(2015),The Big Bang Theory(2018–2019), andGood Girls(2020–2021) and in the filmsJurassic World(2015),[1]The Unicorn(2018), andThe Wrong Missy(2020). She played the voice role ofLottain the animated comedy seriesHarvey Girls Forever!(2018–2020).

Early life
[edit]Dorthea Lauren Allegra Lapkus[7]was born on September 6, 1985[8]in Evanston, Illinois.[9]At an early age she filmed sketches with her older brother and later atEvanston Township High School[10]she participated in the annual student revue and variety show YAMO.[10]
During her senior year of high school, she began taking improv classes at theiO Theater.[10]She attendedDePaul Universitygraduating in 2008 with a degree in English, while she continued performing improv most nights.[10]Lapkus credits watching many television sitcoms andSaturday Night Livewhile young for inspiring her to become a comedian.[11]
Upon graduation, she moved toNew York Citywhere she became involved withUpright Citizens Brigade Theatre.[10]After living in New York City for 15 months,[10]she relocated toLos Angelesin 2010.[1]
Career
[edit]After almost a year in Los Angeles, Lapkus began landing roles in a number of commercials, includingSnickersandJack in the Box[10]as well as a sketch onJimmy Kimmel Live![10]From these successes, she got herself representation and during pilot season landed a supporting role in the short-livedAre You There, Chelsea?.[10]
After self-taping her audition, Lapkus was cast as correctional officer Susan Fischer on the first and second seasons of theNetflixseriesOrange is the New Black.[12]In 2015, Lapkus and the cast won theScreen Actors Guild AwardforOutstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.
In 2014, Lapkus launched her own podcast on theEarwolfnetwork, calledWith Special Guest Lauren Lapkus,in which each week her guest is the host of their own podcast, and she appears as a character on their show. Her guests have includedPaul F. Tompkins,Betsy Sodaro,Andy Daly,Nick Kroll,andScott Aukerman.[13]She has said that she "never expected to get into podcasts at all" and to her it is funny she has one.[10]
In mid-2014, Lapkus was cast inJurassic World,which she filmed in bothHawaiiandNew Orleans.[10]Many of her scenes withJake Johnsonwere improvised.[10]In 2015, she portrayed Joy the receptionist inTBS'sClipped.In 2016, Lapkus wrote and starred in her own 30-minute episode of thesketch showNetflix Presents: The Characters.[14]
Between 2017 and 2019 Lapkus appeared in the HBO seriesCrashingin the reoccurring role of Jess, the main character's ex-wife.[15]
In 2020, Lapkus launched a weekly podcastNewcomerswith co-hostNicole Byeron theHeadgumpodcast network, in which the two friends watch film franchises for the first time and provide commentary on them. On the podcast, Lapkus and Byer have covered theStar Wars,The Lord of the Rings,Tyler Perry,Fast & Furious,Marvel Cinematic Universe,andBatmanfranchises. Past guests have includedJohn Gemberling,Demi Adejuyigbe,Paul F. Tompkins,andBetsy Sodaro.
Lapkus performs improv regularly. She is a cast member ofUCB's flagship show Asssscat[16]and improv group Wild Horses.[17]
Personal life
[edit]Lapkus married actor and improviser Chris Alvarado on May 3, 2014.[18]She announced their separation on February 14, 2016, and they divorced later that year.[19][20]
Lapkus married actorMike Castleon October 5, 2018.[20]On May 18, 2021, Lapkus announced that she and her husband were expecting a baby girl in the summer.[21]She gave birth to a daughter named Holly in 2021. On December 8, 2023, Lapkus revealed she was expecting another baby girl and announced on May 5th that she had given birth to a second daughter, Gigi.[22]
