Laurens W. Molenkamp(born 4 August 1956)[1]is aprofessorofphysicsand Chair of Experimental Physics at theUniversity of Würzburg. He is known for his work on semiconductor structures andtopological insulators.[2]
Biography
[edit]Laurens W. Molenkamp is an experimentalcondensed matterphysicist. He received his Ph.D. inphysical chemistryfrom theUniversity of Groningen, and spent several years first with Philips Research Laboratories in Eindhoven and then as Associate Professor at the RWTH in Aachen. He came to theUniversity of Würzburgin 1999 and is now the Chair of Experimental Physics III and leads the II-VI MBE (molecular beam epitaxy) unit. His research interests include quantum transport in nanostructures, semiconductor spintronics, and optical spectroscopy of semiconductors. He was a co-recipient of theAmerican Physical Society2012Oliver E. Buckley Condensed Matter Prize[3]for his experimental observation of thequantum spin Hall effect, opening up the field oftopological insulators.Since 2012, he has been the Editor[4][5]of the physics journalPhysical Review B.[6]He was a 2013Physics Frontiers Prizelaureate (shortlisted for theFundamental Physics Prize). Thomson Reuters included him on their annual prediction shortlist[7]for the 2014Nobel Prizefor Physics for his experimental research, withCharles L. KaneandShoucheng Zhang,on the quantum spin Hall effect and topological insulators.
