Lawrence Conrad

Lawrence Irvin Conrad(born 1949) is a British historian and scholar ofOriental studies,specializing inNear Eastern studiesand thehistory of medicine.He currently serves as historian for theWellcome Institute for the History of Medicinein London.

Education and career[edit]

Conrad received hisPh.D.fromPrinceton University,completing his dissertation onThe Plague in the Early Medieval Near Eastin 1981.[1]After a brief period working at theAmerican University of Beirut,he moved in 1985 to theWellcome Institute for the History of MedicineatUniversity College, London.[2]In 2001, he moved to theUniversity of Hamburg,where he remained until his retirement in 2008.[3]Conrad is known for his work on medieval Near Eastern social history,ArabicandIslamic medicine,and Arabic, Greek, and Syriac historiography.[citation needed]
