Lex scripta(plural:leges scriptae) is aLatinexpression that means "written orstatutory law".It is in contrast tolex non scripta,customary orcommon law.The term originates from theRoman legaltradition.Emperor Justiniandivided thelex scriptainto several categories:

  • Statutes
  • Plebiscita
  • Senatorial Decrees
  • The Decisions of the Emperors
  • Orders of the Magistrates
  • Answers of Jurisconsults

Lex scriptahas a lasting effect that can define a legal tradition for a culture such as that found in theCorpus Juris Civilis,Magna Carta,Tang Code,or a country'sconstitution.
