Early life
[edit]Anderson is an Afrolatina of Puerto Rican descent.[2]She has been aWiccansince she was eight years old.[3]After she dropped out of college at age 18, Anderson wrote her first book and decided she wanted to become a published writer.[4]
Anderson grew up doing theatre and is a self-proclaimed theatre geek, saying that she did her firstShakespeareplay when she was 12 or 13 years old, which ultimately led to her writing both novels in her debut young adult seriesThe Only Thing Worse Than Me Is Youas retellings ofOscar Wilde'sThe Importance of Being Earnestand William Shakespeare'sMuch Ado About Nothing.[3]
Influences
[edit]She drew on her own experience as a Wiccan for her novelUndead Girl Gang,in which a teenage Wiccan resurrects her dead best friend.[5]Other inspirations for the novel include dark comedy teenage obsessions of hers, namely the moviesThe Craft,HeathersandDeath Becomes Her.[3]
She names American screenwriter and directorShonda Rimesand American plus-size modelTess Hollidayas the sources of some of her inspiration.[6]
