Lincoln W. Caplan, II(born 1950) is an American author, scholar, and journalist. He is the Truman Capote Visiting Lecturer in Law and a Senior Research Scholar in Law atYale Law School.[1]

Early life and education

Caplan was born in 1950 inNew Haven,Connecticut.He attendedPhillips Exeter AcademyinExeter,New Hampshire,where he graduatedcum laudein 1968.[2]He then attendedHarvard College,where he graduatedmagna cum laudein 1972, after which he attendedEmmanuel College,Cambridgefor one year. He earned aJuris Doctordegree fromHarvard Law Schoolin 1976.

Career

Caplan began his career in journalism as an intern forThe New Republicafter his first year of law school. His first piece covered the oral argument inUnited States v. Nixon.He began writing forThe New Yorkerin 1978, and worked on the newspaper for several decades as a member of the editorial board.[3]From 1998 to 2006 he worked on the faculty ofYale Law School,where he found and headed theLegal Affairsmagazine in 2002.[1]From July 2006 to July 2010, he served as a managing partner of Seachange Capital Partners. He has worked as a clerk for thechief justiceof theConnecticut Supreme Court,a management consultant for theBoston Consulting Group,and aWhite House Fellow.He was awarded theGuggenheim Fellowshipin 1989 for the study of general nonfiction.[4]He has also taught at theUniversity of Virginia School of Law.[5]Caplan has authored six books on legal topics. His book,The Insanity Defense and the Trial of John W. Hinckley, Jr.,was awarded aSilver Gavel Awardby theAmerican Bar Association.[6]

Lincoln Caplan marriedSusan L. Carney,a judge forUnited States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.Their daughter, Molly, was born in 1988.[2][4]
