Lisaea

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

LisaeaorLisaia(Ancient Greek:Λίσαια), alsoLisaeorLisai(Ancient Greek:Λίσαι), was an ancient Greekpolis(city-state) in theChalcidice, ancient Macedonia. It is cited byHerodotusas one of the cities—together withLipaxus,Combreia,Gigonus,Campsa,Smila,Aeneia—located in the vicinity of theThermaic Gulf,in a region calledCrusisnear the peninsula ofPallene, whereXerxesrecruited troops in hisexpedition of the year 480 BCE against Greece.[1]

Since Lisaea does not appear in any other source, it has been suggested that the toponym must have been a scribal error that should actually refer to a city calledAesa(Αἶσα) that belonged to theDelian Leagueappearing in the tribute registry toAthensfor 434/3 BCE.[2]This suggestion was accepted by the editors of theBarrington Atlas of the Greek and Roman World.[3]
