This is alist of countries and territories by the United Nations geoscheme,including 193UN member states,twoUN observer states(theHoly See[note 1]and theState of Palestine), twostates in free associationwithNew Zealand(theCook IslandsandNiue), and 49 non-sovereigndependenciesorterritories,as well asWestern Sahara(adisputed territorywhosesovereigntyiscontested) andAntarctica.

In total,248 countries and territorieshave been listed. Not included in the list are eightde facto states(whose sovereignty are not recognised by the United Nations), theSovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia(SBA), and fouruninhabited territories(theAshmore and Cartier Islands,Clipperton Island,theCoral Sea Islands,andNavassa Island).

KosovoandTaiwan(listed asTaiwan Province of China) have been separately listed forstrictly statistical purposes.[1]

Lists

TheUnited Nations geoschemewas created for statistical analysis and consists of sixcontinentalregions, 22 geographicalsubregions,and two intermediaryregions.[2]

TheUnited Nations Statistics Divisioncreated and maintains theM49 –Standard country or area codes for statistical use.[3]The codes are listed from smallest to largest region, left to right.
