Early life, education and early career

Hockings was born on 7 March 1974 inTaranakiin New Zealand'sNorth Island.[3]She has a degree injournalismfrom theUniversity of Auckland.[4]Prior to joining theBBC,Hockings worked as a reporter forTVNZ.[5]Hockings' elder brother Liam, who was also a journalist, died in the 2023Loafers Lodge fire.[6]

Hockings joined theBBCas aproducerin 1999, before being promoted to senior producer in 2000.

As a reporter, Hockings has covered theSeptember 11 attacks,theAfghanistanandIraq wars,the2004 tsunami,the death ofPope John Paul II,the2005 London bombingsand the capture ofSaddam Hussein.[3][7]

Accent

During her earlier presenting days, Hockings claimed her employers made attempts to "iron out" her accent, and that she was sent to theRoyal Academy of Dramatic Artfor "unsuccessful"elocutionlessons.[8]

In February 2023, it was announced Hockings would become a chief presenter on the BBC’s new news channel for both UK and international viewers due to launch in April.[9]
