TheMühlviertel(German pronunciation:[ˈmyːlˌfɪʁtl̩]) is anAustrianregion belonging to thestateofUpper Austria:it is one of four "quarters" of Upper Austria, the others beingHausruckviertel,Traunviertel,andInnviertel.It is named after the three riversGroße Mühl,Kleine Mühl,andSteinerne Mühl.

The Mühlviertel consists of the four Upper Austrian districts that lie north of the riverDanube:Rohrbach,Urfahr-Umgebung,FreistadtandPerg.The parts of the state capitalLinzthat lie north of the Danube also belong to the Mühlviertel. Geologically it is a part of theBohemian Massif.Major towns includeRohrbach,Bad Leonfelden,FreistadtandPerg.

History

The region was the site of a notoriouswar crimeat the end ofWorld War IIin which hundreds of starving Soviet POWs escaped from nearbyMauthausen concentration campand were pursued and murdered around Mühlviertel. TheSSreferred to the event as theMühlviertler Hasenjagd( "Mühlviertel rabbit hunt" ). During theAllied occupation of Austriaafter World War II, the Mühlviertel belonged to the Soviet occupation zone, and the rest of Upper Austria belonged to the American occupation zone.
