Dr.Al-HajMohamed Purvis Drahaman(5 November 1889 - April 1963) was aCeylonese Malaymedical doctor and politician. He was the leader of theAll Ceylon Malay Congress,and was appointed as Member of Parliament in 1956 and 1960.[1]
Born in 1889 inColombo,Drahaman was educated atAll Saints College, GalleandWesley College, Colombo.He graduated from theCeylon Medical Collegein 1928 and entered the Ceylon Medical Service. Five years later he established a private medical practice with after setting up his surgery and dispensary at Rifle Street,Slave Islandin 1933. He led several Malay organisations, such as theCeylon Malay Youth League,the Malay Progressive Association and the All Ceylon Malay Association,[2]the All Ceylon Malay Congress and the Ceylon Malay Cricket Club. Drahaman supported the struggle for Indonesian independence. He was made aMember of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empirein 1953.[3]He was appointed a member of theOrder of the British Empirein the1953 New Year Honoursfor his services to the Malay community.
He died in Mecca in April 1963, whilst performingHajjfor the second time.[3][4]
