Maaqwiis an extinctgenusof largemarinedivingbirdfrom theLate Cretaceous(Northumberland Formation,latestCampanian) ofHornby Island,British Columbia,Canada.[1]The genus nameMaaqwicomes from theCoast Salish"ma'aqwi" meaning "water bird," and the specific epithetcascadensisreflects the fossil's origin from theCascadiaregion of Western North America. The genus is known from a single specimen,RBCM.EH2008.011.01120.It consists of acoracoid,humerus,ulna,andradiusin anoduleofmudstone.The specimen is housed in theRoyal British Columbia Museum.Maaqwihad an estimated body mass of 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).[1]Although initially described as avegaviid,[1]the German paleontologistGerald Mayrsuggested that this genus more likely belongs to theProcellariiformes.[2]
