Machias Bayis abayinWashington County,Mainethat opens into theGulf of Maine.[1] The bay was the scene of theBattle of Machias— the firstnaval battleof theAmerican Revolution,occasioned by the British need for lumber forBoston.[2]
Located at the mouth of theMachias Riverbetween the towns ofMachiasport,Machias,East Machias,Whiting,andCutler,it is separated fromLittle Machias Bayto the east by the Cutler Peninsula, fromLittle Kennebec Bayto the west by the Point of Maine, and from theGulf of Maineto the south byCross Islandand the Libby Islands.
The bay extends roughly 7 mi. (12 km) and is 4 mi. (6 km) at its widest.
