Margalida Prohens Rigo[1][2](born 24 May 1982)[3]is a SpanishPeople's Party(PP) politician. She served in theParliament of the Balearic Islandsfrom 2011 to 2019, and theCongress of Deputies.In 2021, she became president of thePeople's Party of the Balearic Islands,winning the2023 Balearic regional electionand becomingPresident of the Balearic Islands.

Biography

Born inCampos,Mallorca,Prohens graduated in Translation and Interpretation fromPompeu Fabra UniversityinBarcelona.She joined theNew Generations of the People's Partyin 2005.[4]

Elected to theParliament of the Balearic Islandsin 2011,she served as the PP spokesperson within it from 2015 untilBiel Companytook over in 2018.[3]She was announced as the party's candidate for theCongress of Deputiesfor theBalearic constituencyin theApril 2019 Spanish general election;Maria Salomhad originally been named but was then moved to be theSenatecandidate.[5]

In July 2018, new PP PresidentPablo Casadonamed Prohens the party's Secretary of Internal Communication.[6]Three years later, she ran unopposed to be president of thePeople's Party of the Balearic Islands,succeeding Company.[7]In February 2022, she was one of several regional PP leaders to withdraw confidence in Casado, leading to the20th National Congress of the People's Party.[8]She then endorsedAlberto Núñez Feijóo.[9]

In the2023 Balearic regional election,the PP rose nine seats to 26, becoming the largest party.[10]The party reached a pact with the eight deputies fromVox,who did not join the government but hadGabriel Le Senneelected asparliamentarypresident, the role ofspeaker.[11]An issue between the two parties was the status of Spanish and Catalan in the archipelago; the PP agreed with Vox that Spanish should be an option in education and other public services, while installingAntoni Vera,a philologist of Catalan, as Minister of Education.[12]On 7 July, she was sworn in asPresident of the Balearic Islands.[13]
