Marni von Wilpertis an American attorney and politician who has served as a member of theSan Diego City Councilsince 2020, representingDistrict 5.She is a member of theDemocratic Party.

Early life and education[edit]

Marni von Wilpert was raised in theScripps Ranchneighborhood ofSan Diego.[1]After graduating fromScripps Ranch High Schoolin 2001, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in peace and conflict studies from theUniversity of California, Berkeley.She then earned aJuris Doctorfrom theFordham University School of Law.[2][3]

Career[edit]

After receiving her degree from the University of California, Berkeley, von Wilpert served as aPeace Corpsvolunteer inBotswanaduring the height of theHIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa.After graduating from law school, von Wilpert founded a legal clinic associated with the Mississippi Center for Justice.[4][5]Additionally, von Wilpert served as a law clerk forJames E. Graves Jr.and worked as an attorney for theNational Labor Relations Board.She was also a detail staffer on theUnited States House Committee on Education and Laborand served as an advisor to committee chair CongressmanBobby Scott.In 2017, von Wilpert joined theEconomic Policy Instituteas Associate Labor Counsel.[6][7]Since 2018, she has served as Deputy City Attorney in theSan Diego City Attorney's Office.[8]

In the 2020 election for theSan Diego City Council,[9]von Wilpert placed first in thenonpartisan blanket primaryand defeated Joe Leventhal in the November general election.[10]She assumed office on December 10, 2020.[11]

In December 2020, she was appointed to serve on the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority board of directors.[12]
