Thegens Matienawas aplebeianfamily atRome.Members of thisgensfirst appear in history in the time of theSecond Punic War.[1]

Origin

Chase classifies thenomenMatienusas part of a group of Latin gentilicia that appear to be derived from other nomina, although the ultimate origin of the name is not apparent.[2]

  • Publius Matienus, a military tribune in the army ofScipio Africanusin 205 BC. After the capture ofLocri,Matienus and another tribune, Marcus Sergius, were tortured and put to death by their commander, theproconsulQuintus Pleminius, after the tribunes' soldiers had quarreled and fought with those of Pleminius.[3][1][4]
  • Gaius Matienus,duumvir navalisin 181 BC, captured thirty-two ships from theLigures.[5][1][6]
  • Marcus Matienus,[i]praetorin 173 BC, was assigned the province ofHispania Ulterior.After returning to Rome, he was accused of corruption and maladministration of his province, and went into exile atTibur.[7][1][8]
