TheMazatecare anIndigenous people of Mexicowho inhabit theSierra Mazatecain the state ofOaxacaand some communities in the adjacent states ofPueblaandVeracruz.

Some researchers have theorized that the Mazatec, along with Popoloca speakers, once inhabited the lowlands of thePapaloapan basin,but were driven into the adjacent highlands by the expansion ofNahuas.[1]

TheMazatecan languagesare part of thePopolocan familywhich, in turn, is part of theOtomangueanlanguage family.

Traditional religious rituals

Mazatec tradition includes the cultivation ofentheogensfor spiritual and ritualistic use. Plants and fungi used for this purpose includepsilocybin mushrooms,psychoactivemorning gloryseeds (from species such asIpomoea tricolorandIpomoea corymbosa), andSalvia divinorum.[2][3][4]This latter plant is known toMazatec shamansasska María Pastora,the name containing a reference to theVirgin Mary.[3]
