Michael Maloney(born 19 June 1957) is a British actor.

Life and career

Born inBury St. Edmunds,Suffolk,Maloney's first television appearance was asPeter Barkworth's teenage son in the 1979 drama seriesTelford's Change.[1]

He made hisWest Enddebut in 1979 inCan you Hear me at The Back,by Brian Clark, followed immediately byTaking Stepsby Alan Ayckbourn. After playing Toby Gashe inThe Bell,by Iris Murdoch, Maloney joined theRoyal Shakespeare Companyin 1982 playing Ferdinand inThe Tempest.After the RSC, he went on to play inThe Perfectionistat Hampstead, the title role of Peer Gynt for Cambridge Theatre Company,The London Cuckoldsat the Lyric Hammersmith,Two Planks and a PassionbyAnthony Minghella,directed byDanny Boyleat Greenwich andBuilt on Sandat the Royal Court. Maloney went on to appear in many films and television series, includingWhat if Its Raining,by Anthony Minghella, for Channel 4. He became a familiar face after playing the Dauphin inKenneth Branagh's1989 film adaptationofHenry V.In the early 1990s, he played Prince Hal inHenry IV Parts 1 and 2,Romeo inRomeo and Julietfor the RSC and Hamlet on a national tour starting at Greenwich. He appeared on television[2]inMr Wakefield's Crusade,on film as Mark inTruly, Madly, Deeply,and in 1994 he took the lead in theBBCadaptation ofLove on a Branch Line.He appeared in both the1990and1996film versions ofHamlet,asRosencrantzandLaertesrespectively,[3]and in several otherShakespearescreen adaptations, including the lead role inIn the Bleak MidwinterbyKenneth Branagh.In addition to his TV appearances, he starred as Jason Fields in the filmAmerican Reelin 1999. 2002 saw him play Brian Albumen, personal aide toRik Mayall's Adonis Cnut character in theGranandMarkspenned TV sitcomBelieve Nothing.In 2003, he appeared as the Belgian Prosper Profond inThe Forsyte Saga.In the theatre he played Hamlet again for Yukio Ninagawa on tour and at the Barbican. He playedCassiusin the 2005 miniseriesEmpire,John Majorin 2009'sMargaretand Prime Minister SirRobert Peelin the 2009 filmThe Young Victoria.

He is active in radio drama onBBC Radio 4,playing the Dean in both series ofHigh Table, Lower Ordersand Giles the gossip columnist inHis Master's Voice.He has made a guest appearance in the BBC Radio 4 seriesBaldi.He has also appeared in aBollywoodfilms Kisna, andI See You,playing the detective inspector.

In 2010, he appeared in long-running dramaCasualtyas consultant Howard Fairfax, and in series 4 of the political satire seriesThe Thick of It,he played Matthew Hodge, part of the Goolding Inquiry.[4]In 2013, he portrayedSir Henry Stafford,third husband ofLady Margaret Beaufort,in the BBC TV seriesThe White Queen.In 2016, he appeared in theITV/NetflixseriesParanoid.He was also in the second series ofUtopiafor Channel 4 and playedEdward Heathin series 3 ofThe Crown.He most recently has a cameo role inBelfast,directed by Kenneth Branagh, and played the role of Vanya, inVanya, Sonia, Masha and Spike,by Christopher Durang, directed by Walter Bobbie, at the Charing Cross Theatre.

He has recorded many audiobooks includingCaptain Corelli's Mandolin.[5]

He has also lent his voice to various video game characters, including The Lost Soul in the 2013 video gameCastlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate,Avallac'h in the 2015 video gameThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt,and Doloran in the 2018 video gameNi no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom.

In 2025, Maloney will star asHercule Poirotin a touring production ofMurder on the Orient Express.[6]

Personal life

Maloney's father emigrated from County Cork, Ireland to Godalming, Surrey, UK.[7]

In 2002, Maloney married Italian-American model and photographer Kim Andreolli;[8][9]Maloney and Andreolli had one child, a daughter, before divorcing.

Maloney lives in South London in Clapham.

He is an advocate for macrobiotic eating.[10][11]
