Michaela Bercu(Hebrew:מיכאלה ברקו;born31 March 1967) is anIsraelimodel and actress.[3]
Early life
[edit]Bercu was born inTel Aviv, Israel,toAshkenazi Jewishparents whoimmigratedto Israel fromRomania.She is anonly child.Her father Armand (1925-2007) hails fromBucharest,whereas her mother Yehudit fromTimișoara.Bercu grew up speakingHebrew,Romanian,andHungarian.In 2015, she acquired Romaniancitizenship.[4]
Career
[edit]She started her career asmodelat age of 14 when her mother took her to thefashion photographerMenachem Oz. She later signed withElite Model Management.Bercu is married to businessman Ron Zuckerman.[5]The couple have four children.
A cover of Bercu byPeter Lindberghappeared on the November 1988 AmericanVoguewearing a bejeweledChristian LacroixT-shirt and a pair of faded jeans; the shot was done outdoors in natural light. It wasAnna Wintour's first cover since taking over as the magazine's editor-in-chief, and was seen as signaling a break from the more formal and posed cover images favored by her predecessor,Grace Mirabella.It was also the first time a model on the cover ofVoguewas shown wearing jeans.[6][7]Bercu was also the first Israeli woman to be featured on the cover of AmericanVogue.[8]She would later appear on the covers of French, Italian, German, and AustralianVogue,American, British, Spanish, German, and SwedishElle,Mademoiselle,L'Officiel,Madame Figaro,Glamour,andCosmopolitan.She was also featured in the 1990Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.[1]
She has appeared in advertising campaigns forBlumarine,DKNY,Joseph,Andrew Marc,Rochas,Laurèl,CP Shades,Lord & Taylor,Bloomingdales,L'Oreal,andRevlon.
Bercu also appeared in the American filmBram Stoker's Draculaas one ofDracula's sensuousbrides,co-starringGary Oldman,Winona Ryder,Anthony HopkinsandKeanu Reeves.[9]She briefly retired from modeling in 1996 after marrying but returned in 1999 modeling plus sized clothing.[10][11] Bercu returned to modeling in 2003 until 2006, and in 2011 Bercu started working for products, clothing lines, and apps.
