Mike Mohring(born 22 December 1971) is a German politician of theChristian Democratic Union(CDU).

Early life and education

Mohring grew up in theGDR.On a scholarship of theHanns Seidel Foundation,he studied law at theUniversity of Jena,without completing the degree. He later completed adouble degreeprogram in international business andtax lawat theFrankfurt School of Finance & Managementand theMCI Management Center Innsbruckfrom 2007 until 2009.

Career in state politics

Mohring started his political career during thefall of the Berlin Wallby joining theNew Forum.In 1993 he became a member of theCDU.

Mohring was first elected to theLandtagin the 1999 state elections. In parliament, he served on the Committee on Internal Affairs (1999–2004) and on the Budget Committee (1999–2009). From 2008, he chaired the CDU parliamentary group.

In 2014, Mohring became leader of his party inThuringia.He was reelected in 2016.[1]In this capacity, he led the party's campaign for the2019 state elections.

Role in national politics

On the national level, Mohring served as a CDU delegate to theFederal Conventionfor the purpose of electing thePresident of Germanyin 2009, 2010 and 2012.[2]

In the negotiations to form afourthcoalition government underChancellorAngela Merkelfollowing the2017 federal elections,Mohring was part of the working group on economic affairs, led byThomas Strobl,Alexander DobrindtandBrigitte Zypries.In 2019, he was appointed by the leaders of CDU and CSU,Annegret Kramp-KarrenbauerandMarkus Söder,to the parties’ ad-hoc steering group on climate policy.[3]

In September 2020, Mohring announced that he would run for a parliamentary seat in the2021 national elections.[4]He did not succeed inJena – Sömmerda – Weimarer Land I,and in 2024 also lost the state constituencyWeimarer Land I – Saalfeld-Rudolstadt III.

In October 2015, amid theEuropean migrant crisis,Mohring visited arefugee campinLebanonto learn more about the plight ofSyriansfleeing the violence in the ongoingSyrian civil warthat erupted in 2011; he subsequently demanded more German support for Syria's neighbors.[6]

Ahead of the Christian Democrats’leadership electionin 2018, Mohring publicly opposedFriedrich Merz's candidacy to succeedAngela Merkelas the party's chair.[7]For the2021 national elections,he later endorsedArmin Laschetas the Christian Democrats' joint candidate to succeed Merkel aschancellor.[8]
