Makrany(Belarusian:Макраны,Polish:Mokrany) is a village in theBrest Regionin southwesternBelarus.

History

The village was located in theBrześć Litewski Voivodeshipof the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth until theThird Partition of Polandin 1795, when it was annexed byRussia.FollowingWorld War I,Mokrany was part of rebornPoland,within which it was administratively located in thePolesie Voivodeship.[citation needed]

Following the joint German-Sovietinvasion of Poland,which startedWorld War IIin September 1939, Mokrany was firstoccupied by the Soviet Unionuntil 1941. In September 1939, 30Polish prisoners of warfrom theRiverine Flotilla of the Polish Navywere held by the Soviets in a local school building, and 18 were soon massacred.[2]From 1941 it was occupied byNazi Germany,and from 1944 it was re-occupied by the Soviet Union, which eventually annexed it from Poland in 1945. A monument to the victims of the Mokrany massacre was unveiled after thedissolution of the Soviet Unionin 1991.[3]
