Monellan Castle

Monellan Castlewas a large castellatedmansionon the southern outskirts of The Cross, ahamletjust outsideKillygordonin the east ofCounty DonegalinUlster,the northernprovinceinIreland.It was constructed in the eighteenth century for the Delap family, anUlster-Scotsfamily who acquired the estate in the late eighteenth century.[1][2]The family also owned estates inBuckinghamshirein England.[3]The MonellanBurn,also known as the Creamery Burn, runs along the western and north-western edge of the formerdemesnesurrounding Monellan Castle, flowing into theRiver Finnvery near The Cross. Theburnseparated the Monellan CastleDemesnefrom the adjacenttownlandof Ballynaman (sometimes written as Ballinamana).[4]

During the 1930s, the castle and its estate was acquired by theIrish Land Commissionwhich redistributed the land to local tenant farmers, as was the policy at the time. The castle was then, with support from the Irish Government, demolished.[5]
