Mong Pan(Shan:ဝဵင်းမိူင်းပၼ်ႇ) is a town and seat ofMong Pan Townshipin the southernShan StateofBurma.[1]To the south it bordersMae Hong Son ProvinceinThailandand lies west of theSalween River.It lies alongNational Road 45.
Etymology
[edit]The name "Mong Pan" means "town of the revolving [lotus]" inShan,and is transliterated into Burmese asMaingpan,also speltMine Pan.[2]
History
[edit]This town was formerly the residence of theSawbwaofMongpan State.The four districts ofMöng Tang,Möng Hang,Möng KyawtandMöng Hta,[1]located to the south on the east bank of theSalweenbelonged to the Cis-Salween Sawbwa of Möngpan. In 1888 there was trouble owing to the action ofSiam,who attempted to take possession of them. Siamese troops were posted in the four districts. Siam also claimed a further district, Möng Hsat, but posted no troops there.[3]
