NGC 4459is alenticular galaxylocated about 50 millionlight-yearsaway[2]in theconstellationofComa Berenices.[3]NGC 4459 is also classified as aLINERgalaxy.[2]NGC 4459 was discovered by astronomerWilliam Herschelon January 14, 1787.[4]NGC 4459 is a member of theVirgo Cluster.[5]
Physical characteristics

[edit]NGC 4459 has a central flocculent dust disk that surrounds an inner ring.[6][7]Also, there appears to be evidence of ongoing star formation in the disk.[7]
Super massive black hole
[edit]NGC 4459 has asupermassive black holewith an estimated mass of roughly 70 million suns (7×107M☉). Its diameter is estimated to be around 2.87astronomical units[8](266.4 million mi).[9]
