Historical province of the Ming Empire in China
Nanzhili,formerlyromanizedasNan-chih-liand also known asSouthorSouthern ZhiliorChih-li,was ahistoricalprovinceof theMing Empire.Its capital wasNanjing,from which it is also sometimes known asNanjingorNanking Province.Nanzhili combined areas of theYuanprovincesofHenan JiangbeiandJiangzheand took its name—Chinesefor "Southern Directly Administered Area" —from Nanjing's status as the Ming'snational capitalunder theHongwu Emperorand as the secondary capital after theYongle Emperor's move toBeijing,which oversawBeizhilior the Northern Directly Administered Area. During the earlyQing Dynasty,[when?]Nanzhili was renamedJiangnanand then divided into the separateprovincesofJiangsuandAnhui.Under theRepublicandPeople's Republic of China,an area of Jiangsu also became theprovincial-level municipalityofShanghai.
