Nemetin(Hungarian:Drávanémeti) is a village in easternSlavonia,Croatia,located nearOsijek.It has a population of 139 (census 2011).[3]It is administratively located in the City ofOsijek.
History
[edit]The village was the site of the largest prisoner exchange in theCroatian War of Independencewhen on August 14, 1992, 662 Croatian soldiers and civilians were returned from Yugoslavian custody.[4]Most of the prisoners had been incarcerated in theSremska Mitrovica campinSerbia.[4]A group of citizens ofBosnia and Herzegovinawere also freed as part of the transfer, includingSulejman Tihić.[5]A memorial to the event was unveiled on its fifteenth anniversary.[5]
During the war the area was mined. In 2006, a business zone in the area was officially demined.[6]
