Neville Kanakaratna

DeshamanyaNeville T. D. Kanakaratna(1923 - 19 September 1999)[1]was aSri Lankanlawyer,diplomatandscholarwho was theGovernorof theSouthern Province.[2]He was the Sri LankanAmbassadorto theUnited StatesandHigh CommissionertoIndia.

Educated atSouthlands College Galle[3]and at theRoyal College, Colombo,where he was theHead Prefectin 1941, Kanakaratna pursued his higher studies at theUniversity of Ceylon,graduating with aB.A.in history.[4]After studying law at theColombo Law Collegehe became anadvocateand was known as a scholar in history.

Kanakaratna went on to serve the government of Ceylon in a legal advisory capacity. Holding appointments such asfirst secretaryand legal adviser to Ceylon's delegation to the UN and thereafter, he served as theministerin the Ceylon's High Commission inLondon.

Thereafter he worked in the UN in several capacities that included Vice President of theUnited Nations Trusteeship Counciland legal adviser to theSecretary-General of the United Nations.[5]

Kanakaratna went on to become one of Ceylon's prominent diplomats, serving as its Ambassador to the United States and High Commissioner to India and was the head of the committee for the establishment of theLakshman Kadirgamar Institute of International Relations and Strategic Studies.He was awarded the title ofDeshamanyafrom the Government of Sri Lanka.
