TheNew Zealand cricket teamtoured Pakistan in September and October 2021, and were scheduled to play threeOne Day International(ODI) and fiveTwenty20 International(T20I) matches.[1][2][3]It was New Zealand's first tour of Pakistansince 2003.[4]However, on the morning of the first ODI match,New Zealand Cricket(NZC) raised a security alert with thePakistan Cricket Board(PCB) and the Pakistan Government,[5]which resulted in the entire tour being called off.[6][7]
In December 2021, both cricket boards agreed to play a set of extra fixturesin Pakistan in April 2023to make up for the postponed tour,[8][9]following New Zealand'stour of Pakistan in December 2022.[10][11]
Background
[edit]On 4 August 2021, the PCB confirmed the schedule for the tour.[12]The ODIs were scheduled to take place at theRawalpindi Cricket Stadium,[13]and the T20Is would have taken place at theGaddafi StadiuminLahore.[14]Tom Lathamwas named as New Zealand's captain, withKane Williamsonbeing unavailable due to him playing in the rescheduled phase of the2021 Indian Premier League.[15]After theTalibantookcontrol of Afghanistanin August 2021, several New Zealand players reportedly expressed concerns about touring Pakistan.[16]On 18 August,New Zealand Cricketannounced that its players would have the right to pull out of the tour if they "felt uneasy about touring Pakistan even if the tour went ahead".[17]
The ODI series was originally scheduled to form part of the inaugural2020–23 ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.[18][19]However, in September 2021 it was announced that due to the unavailability of theDecision Review System(DRS), the ODI matches would be a standalone bilateral series.[20]The World Cup Super League matches were rescheduled for New Zealand'stour of Pakistan in 2022–23.[21]
Reactions and aftermath
[edit]Newly-appointed PCB ChairmanRamiz Rajaexpressed his disappointment onTwitterand said that "New Zealand will hear us atICC".[22]Former Pakistan fast bowlerShoaib Akhtaralso reacted on New Zealand's decision to pull out of the series and said "New Zealand just killed Pakistan cricket".[23]Pakistan's team captainBabar Azamalso took to Twitter to express his displeasure over the cancellation of the series, saying he was "extremely disappointed" and stated that he has the full trust in Pakistan's security agencies.[24]
The New Zealand cricket board chief executiveDavid Whitesaid in a statement that they had no choice but to call off the tour of Pakistan.[25]White later said that "there was no way we could stay in the country" following the advice they were given, but also thanked the PCB for their professionalism.[26]Former New Zealand all-rounderGrant Elliottalso reacted to the news and said, "Sad news for players and fans".[27]
On 20 September 2021, theEngland and Wales Cricket Board(ECB) announced that both theirmen'sandwomen'stours to the country in October 2021 had been cancelled,[28]citing issues around wellbeing and concerns of travelling to the region.[29]Australia,which are alsoscheduled to tour Pakistan in 2022,said that said they are monitoring the situation and will "talk with the relevant authorities once more information becomes known."[30]
