Nieuw Jacobkondre(alsoNjoeng Jacob Kondreor justJacobkondre) is a town in theSipaliwini DistrictofSuriname.It is situated on theSaramacca River.The village is inhabited byMatawai people.[1]
Overview
[edit]The village of Jacobkondre was founded in the 1860s by Jacob Tooti.[2]The original village was deserted around 1910, and a new settlement was built nearby.[3]
The village has a school, clinic, and church.[1]In 2014, a police station was opened in Nieuw Jacobkondre, because of increased crime at the nearby gold mines and thegarimpero(illegal gold miner) village ofVilla Brazil.[4]
Transport
[edit]Nieuw Jacobkondre can be reached via an unpaved road which connects to theSouthern East-West Linkand from there to the rest of the country.[5]TheNjoeng Jacob Kondre Airstripalso serves Nieuw Jacobkondre.[6]
