Nikki Sanderson[1](born 28 March 1984)[2]is an Englishactressand formerglamour modelwho is known for playingCandice Stowein the televisionsoap operaCoronation Street,[3]Dawn Bellamy inHeartbeat[3]andMaxine MinniverinHollyoaks.[4]During her time atCoronation Streetand since, she has also been atelevision presenteron programmes such asCD:UK,[5]Junior Eurovision: The British Final[6]andMinistry of Mayhem.[7]

Career

Sanderson joinedCoronation Streetin 1999 and left in autumn 2005, when her character left Weatherfield to become a stylist forStatus Quo.[8]Prior to this, she had appeared in children's dramaChildren's Ward[9]and in 2004, the hit fitnessDVDCoronation Street: Funk Fit.[10]

Since leaving Coronation Street she has appeared in episodes of theBBCtelevision series'Holby City[11]andNew Street Lawalongside fellowCoronation StreetalumniChris GascoyneandChris Bisson.[12]In 2006, Sanderson appeared in a touring production ofThe Vagina MonologueswithJerry Hallamongst others[13]and an episode ofKay Mellor'sStrictly Confidential.[14]

A keen singer, andkaraokeenthusiast, Sanderson has made several television appearances singing, such asITV'sMadonna Mania,[15]Discomania,[16]Abba Mania 2and CelebrityStars in Their Eyes,[17]where her impression ofLeAnn Rimes,singing the theme from the filmCoyote Ugly,Can't Fight the Moonlightearned her the winner's spot. She has also appeared onThe X Factor: Battle of the Stars[18]in the solo 16–24 category, mentored bySharon Osbournewhere she was eliminated fifth. At the time, though, Sanderson was suffering fromtonsillitisand was straining her voice to sing.

For 2006 and 2007, she was signed by sports fashion footwear brandKangaROOSfor their new print advertising campaign.[19][20]

In June 2007, it was reported that Sanderson would make a brief return to Coronation Street in autumn 2007, when her character, Candice Stowe, turns up during the build up toSarah Platt's (Tina O'Brien) wedding.[21]However these reports were later dismissed by Sanderson during an appearance onITV'sLoose Women.

She appeared in the "Tuareg Productions" playLiving Under One Roofat theTheatre Royal,Nottinghamfrom 26–30 June 2007.[22]

Sanderson appeared in the second series ofAll Star Family Fortuneswhich aired on 25 December 2007. She made a second appearance on the first edition of the quiz's fourth series, on 20 September 2009, as part of a team representingHeartbeat.

In 2008, she joined the cast of theITV1series,Heartbeat,set in the 1960s, to play the part of Dawn Bellamy.[8]She plays the part of Audrey in the horror filmBoogeyman 3released in 2009.[23]She plays the character Gee Gee, adanceteacher, in the 2008 filmClubbed,an underworld drama set in the early 1980s.[24]

Sanderson featured in the 2010 UK tour ofThe Vagina Monologues.[22]

In September 2012, it was announced that Sanderson had joined the cast ofHollyoaksasMaxine Minniver.[25]Sanderson's first episode was aired on 5 November 2012.

In December 2012, Sanderson appeared in pantomime asPeter Panat theGracie FieldsTheatre inRochdale.[26]

In late 2013, Sanderson, along with herHollyoaksco-star and on-screen boyfriendJeremy Sheffield,appeared in character as theirHollyoakscharacters Maxine and Patrick in a series of government "This is Abuse" adverts, highlighting the issues ofdomestic violence.[27]

For her portrayal of Maxine, Sanderson received nominations for the "Best Actress" award at theBritish Soap Awards 2014[28]and 2015.[29]She was also nominated for "Beat Serial Performance" at theNational Television Awards 2015.[29]

Personal life

Nikki Ann Sanderson was born on 28 March 1984 in Blackpool, Lancashire, England.[30]Sanderson dated her formerCoronation Streetco-starDanny Youngfrom 2005 to February 2009.[31]

In 2023, Sanderson pursued a failed civil action against Mirror Group Newspapers in the High Court alleging phone hacking. Despite evidence showing that she had been illegally targeted by the publisher, the judge found her claim was made out of time, beyond the six year statute limit.[32][33]
